You don’t need to pay to move your car if it’s a job you can easily do yourself! That’s why car haulers are becoming more popular with Americans who have to move their vehicles from one place to another. This is a must-have for those who often need to move their vehicle. Before you begin, however, you should know how to properly load your car into the trailer.

Prep the Loading Zone

There are a few things you’ll need to make sure are in place first before getting started. Make sure you’re on flat ground when you do this. Also make sure your tow vehicle is secure, with the vehicle in park, the parking brake on, the trailer brakes on and chocks in place if necessary. If the unit moves too much while loading, you can lose your alignment and drive off the ramp.

To load the car successfully into the auto trailer, you have to make sure the ramp is properly and securely aligned. No driver wants to find out their loading ramp is out of whack, as the consequences of that can be pretty frustrating. For similar reasons, measure once, twice, three times if needed to make sure your vehicle can fit on the ramps.

Gather The Team

If it’s possible, try to have some people to help you with the process of loading. You’ll need one person who’ll drive the car into the auto trailer.  This person should be fairly confident behind the wheel of whatever vehicle you’re loading, as one excessive push of the gas can make for a big problem. In this case, you want to follow the wisdom of ‘slow and steady wins the race’.

You’ll also appreciate having one or two people to help direct the driver using established hand signals to let them know how to maneuver successfully into the car hauler. One person will do just fine, but a second person can help guide you from a different angle. Make sure these people know to stand off to the side and never between the trailer and the tow vehicle.

Load the Vehicle

Once the ramp is ready, you have to load the vehicle into the auto trailer. There are two basic ways to accomplish this. The first is to have a competent driver behind the wheel who carefully moves the car into place. Remember that one wrong move can throw the alignment off completely. For more accurate and less-tense loading, many people prefer to use a winch to pull the vehicle onto the car hauler. If you don’t have a winch in your trailer, talk to the service staff at Hayes Trailer Sales for more help!

Secure the Car

Once the car is inside the auto trailer, you have to secure it in place. One good way to do this is by using ratchet straps. These press down on the car’s natural suspension to keep it from moving around too much in transit. They will need to be wrapped around the tires to keep the vehicle in place. For extra security, use an axle strap to keep the car grounded.
