Golf Carts For Sale in Van Alstyne near Dallas, TX
Are Traffic Laws Applicable to Golf Carts?
When you look at your golf cart, you may be tempted to see it as almost like a miniature car. It has an engine, four wheels, a steering wheel, foot pedals, and overall a car-like shape. Could you possibly ride it on the road? You’d never take it out on the highway of course, but within your own neighborhood seems doable. To help answer your questions, TSI Trailers has created this short guide.
Following the Rules of the Road
When it comes to rules and regulations regarding driving golf carts on the road, they can differ from place to place. In certain communities, golf carts are actually the only vehicle allowed, while in others they are almost as commonly used as cars. However, these are more isolated cases. Local and state laws will determine if it is legal to drive your golf cart on the road, though no matter where you are a street legal cart will need things like mirrors and turn signals to be safely operated and legal to drive. Know and obey all local laws and regulations to avoid any preventable legal headaches.
Speed Concerns
Assuming a cart has already been modified to add any missing mirrors or turn signals, the biggest hurdle preventing golf carts from being driven on the road is their low speed. An unmodified cart has a maximum speed of about 20 MPH, too slow to be safe on many roads. This limits any activity to slower roads, and even then you may have to share space with cars and trucks going 5 to 15 MPH faster than you. While this is still completely doable, always make sure you are visible to other drivers and exercise appropriate caution.
